NIGERIAN reggae singer, John Obinna Ibegbulem, popularly known as President Son, has released two albums, Rasta Man No Violence and Straight Out of Oklahoma, in a bid to revive conscious music and reconnect listeners with the genre’s message of peace and social responsibility.
The Imo-born singer says the albums explore complementary themes, with the first promoting love, peace and unity, while the second draws on his travel experiences to encourage young people to pursue their dreams despite challenges.
According to him, Rasta Man No Violence blends reggae with local influences and urges Nigerians to embrace peaceful coexistence. “This is my way of telling the people that we need to love one another, we need to make peace in our communities. We need to treat our neighbours as our brothers and our sisters,” he said.
President’s Son described Straight Out of Oklahoma as motivational, explaining that the decision to release both projects simultaneously reflected their compatibility. “That’s why I think it’s better to drop them the same day, at the same time,” he stated.
According to the reggae music act who hails from Mbaise, Imo State, the albums are available on digital music platforms. Rasta Man No Violence, released under Virgin Birds Entertainment, an Asaba-based record label, owned by actor Cyril Pharaoh Chukwuemeka, appeared on Audiomack on September 30.
The rising star began performing in primary school and was a member of the musical group Rough and Ready before it disbanded in 2003. He started his solo career in 2004 in Lagos, before he later travelled to Egypt in 2007.
In 2008, he moved to Tel Aviv, Israel, where he started singing and entertaining fun seekers with his kind of music at the beach. He returned to Nigeria in 2011 and released his debut single President Son a few days later, followed by the second single From Jerusalem to Tel-Aviv among other songs including Nigeria which he said was inspired by his conversation with a certain songwriter and singer.
