Afrobeats opened doors for African music, says Tyla
South African star, Tyla, has given a nod to Afrobeats at the 2024 MTV EMAs, acknowledging the genre’s impact on global music.
She continued her award-winning streak, having already scooped major awards this season, including beating out Nigerian singers like Asake, Rema, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, and Tems to win both the Best Afrobeats and Best African Act at the 2024 VMAs.
At the EMAs, Tyla clinched the Best Afrobeats title, surpassing fierce competitors Ayra Starr, DBN Gogo, Diamond Platnumz, and TitoM & Yuppe to secure the Best African Act award.

During her acceptance speech, standing alongside her younger sister, Tyla praised Afrobeats, saying, “Thank you to Afrobeats, It has opened many doors for African music.”
Tyla’s recent shout-out to Afrobeats is seen by some as a kind of redemption. At the 2024 VMAs, she famously chose to highlight her Amapiano roots when accepting the Best Afrobeats award for her hit single Water, a move that stirred reactions as Water has Afrobeats flavour.
Her VMAs speech left some fans and industry watchers feeling she missed an opportunity to celebrate Afrobeats, a genre that has paved the way for many African artists on the global stage.
This time, Tyla’s nod to Afrobeats at the EMAs is being applauded as a thoughtful recognition of what the genre has done for African music.
