A forthcoming DC comic tagged Second Coming has sparked outrage over its portrayal of Jesus Christ.

In the story, Jesus is not the hero Christians portray him to be. Instead, he is “locked up” by God after God is unimpressed by his first coming to Earth and has to “learn what it takes to be the true messiah of mankind by becoming roommates with the world’s favorite savior: the all-powerful superhero Sun-Man, the Last Son of Krispex! But when Christ returns to Earth, He’s shocked to discover what has become of His gospel—and now, He aims to set the record straight.”

As expected, Christians around the world have expressed their anger over the “blasphemous [rather] than biblical” comic but its writer, Mark Russell has explained that the focus of the comic is on the way Christians misunderstand the Bible and Jesus teachings.

“The Christian religion doesn’t really base itself on what He taught, particularly in the modern Evangelical megachurches. They have Him more as a mascot on t-shirts to prove they’re on the winning team. [Second Coming] is about Jesus coming down and being appalled by what He sees has been done in His name by Christianity in the last 2,000 years.”

An organisation under the name, Caroline Craddock and the entire CitizenGO team, have created an online petition to request that DC immediately pulls the comic from their publishing schedule.

“Can you imagine the media and political uproar if DC Comics was altering and poking fun at the story of Muhammad… or Buddha?

“This blasphemous content should not be tolerated. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. His story should not be ridiculed for the sake of selling comic books,” CitizenGO argues.

At the time of writing, the petition has attracted over 110,000 signatures in less than one week.

But Russell insists with his argument,

“The concept is that God was so upset with Jesus’ performance the first time He came to Earth since He was arrested so soon and crucified shortly after, that He has kept Him locked-up since then. God then sees this superhero on Earth a few thousand years later and says, ‘That’s what I wanted for You!’”
In the petition, they write that the outrageous and blasphemous comic should be “immediately pulled from DC Comic’s publishing schedule”. Can you imagine the media and political uproar if DC Comics was altering and poking fun at the story of Muhammad… or Buddha?

Second Coming will be released in March and will continue if its six issues are successful.
