Top Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has shut down allegations that she received a bribe from the Nigerian government to cast doubts about the Lekki Tollgate shootings.

Many of the star’s fans had accused her of receiving a bribe after she made a tweet on October 20 asking people to stop sensationalizing the shootings.

She tweeted:

“If People died during the Lekki Toll Assault , let their people speak out please and if there were No deaths then enough with the sensationalization because it does not remove from the Crime that happened.”

The tweet was met with backlash as many alleged that the government must have paid the actress to make such a tweet.

Omotola has since explained that the meaning of her tweet was misconstrued as what she meant to state was that whether anyone died or not doesn’t change the fact that a crime happened and innocent unarmed protesters were shot at.

She said her tweet was because she realized that it appeared the authorities were trying to deny people were killed at the Lekki toll gate.

Omotola apologized for her tweet and further tried to explain herself in follow-up tweets.

In 2019, for her cover article on the Guardian Life Magazine, Omotola complained of the continued assault on citizens by men in uniform as well as the general insecurity everywhere.

This was a follow-up to a tweet that she tagged President Muhammadu Buhari and his vice, Professor Yemi Osibanjo. She had tweeted:

“The country under your watch is Hellish! The lack of money in circulation, coupled with continuous assault and killings by uniformed men, will make this country implode! It is unbearable. Do something. Insecurity. Fear and desperation everywhere.”

She had explained at the time that the tweet was a result of her love for Nigeria.
