China Charmeleon's innovation has not only astonished fans, but also South African house stalwarts like as Vinny Da Vinci and DJ Christos.
Siphamandla Innocent Nene’s deep house tracks, like the skin-colour-changing reptile that inspired his stage name, China Charmeleon, take on different hues—plated with dazzling synth lines, darkened by gloomy pads, or enriched with dusty soul samples. China Charmeleon’s innovation has not only astonished fans, but also South African house stalwarts like Vinny Da Vinci and DJ Christos.
He moved to Johannesburg in 2018 after trying to earn a livelihood as a musician in his tiny hamlet Carolina in the Mpumalanga province. His music was discovered by prominent DJ/producer Kid Fonque. Fonque mentored the then-unknown producer, but he published his songs on his label Stay True Sounds, which is home to a vanguard of creative South African dance music musicians.
Fitting in, the creative producer turned out a couple of EPs, including his 2020 debut album Colours, and was entrusted with remixing 13 tracks from STS’s 100th release, Remixes Stay True Sounds. China Charmeleon demonstrated his unrivalled ability by performing various stunts with each remix.
