US actor Eric Dane, known for playing Dr Mark Sloan in the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, has died at 53, reports said on Thursday.
Dane revealed in April 2025 that doctors had diagnosed him with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the degenerative neurological condition also called Lou Gehrig’s disease.
In a statement shared with CBS News, his family said he died on Thursday afternoon after what they described as a courageous battle with ALS, adding that he spent his final days surrounded by loved ones, including his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters, Billie and Georgia.
Born in San Francisco, Dane began acting in the early 1990s with TV appearances including Saved by the Bell before landing his breakout role on Grey’s Anatomy in 2006.
He later starred in HBO’s Euphoria, widening his audience beyond the long running hospital series that made him a household name.
