Justin Timberlake has pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving while intoxicated (DWI) coming from his arrest in the early hours of Tuesday, June 18, 2024, in New York.

In a virtual court hearing, a judge suspended Timberlake’s driver’s license in the state of New York for the duration of the case. This suspension comes after the 43-year-old singer refused to take a breathalyser test after getting caught driving past a traffic stop on June 18.

Sag Harbor Justice Carl Irace reprimanded Timberlake’s attorney, Edward Burke Jr., over “irresponsible” comments he had made about the case, warning that he may issue a gag order if such remarks continue. A gag order is a court order issued to someone to stop them from releasing information about a legal case.

“It comes off as an attempt to poison the case before it even begins,” Irace said during the roughly 30-minute hearing.

Burke maintained Timberlake’s claim that he was not intoxicated when he was pulled over. The singer told police he had “one martini” before heading to a friend’s house.

“Justin Timberlake was not intoxicated,” Burke told reporters after the hearing. He said he plans to “file motions” to defend his client. Adding that the “content of those motions and the arguments contained therein will speak for themselves.”

Dates of the next hearing

Timberlake appeared virtually from Antwerp, Belgium, wearing a black collared shirt. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for August 9, which the singer is not required to attend. Another hearing is planned for September 13, but may not take place depending on developments in August, according to Burke.

The DWI charge comes from an incident that occurred in the early hours of June 18. Justin Timberlake was pulled over in Sag Harbor for driving through a stop sign. Also, he failed to stay on the right side of the road. Police said the singer performed poorly on the sobriety tests. He also refused a chemical test to determine his blood alcohol content.

A spokesperson for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office said an “amended charging document was filed on July 2,” but that “the facts and circumstances of the case have not been changed or amended.”

Timberlake, a 10-time Grammy winner, could face up to one year in jail. Or a fine of up to $1,000 if convicted on the DWI charge. His attorney, however, expressed confidence that the case would be dismissed.
