Fashion, extravagance, and elegance aren’t typically associated with the people of the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo amidst their history of poverty, disease, malnutrition, and civil war. Yet, centered in the middle of the Congo’s chaos, sits La Sape.

Despite the war and strife that have plagued and damaged the people of Congo, they show resilience through their sense of fashion and style. La Sape revolves around values of respect, peace, integrity, and humour, showcased through rich and colourful wardrobes. A Sapeur must embody peace, good manners, and serve as an inspiration through their attitude and behaviour.

Sapeurs, often farmers and taxi drivers, are renowned for their dandy fashion. They cultivate beauty in themselves through flamboyant attires as part of a complex political and cultural manoeuvre. These individuals prioritise high fashion above all else.

Les Sapeurs have gained widespread popularity and recognition despite facing opposition over the years from propaganda attempting to ban the subculture in public places. The social movement was revived by musician Papa Wemba in Kinshasa through his music. Wemba emphasised the importance of smart dressing for all Congolese men, regardless of their social differences and standing.

La Sape, which started as a political movement, has evolved into a strong and recognised socio-political society. The name itself reflects the rich colours of elegance, ambience, and fashion that define the society.
