If you’re still using a phone from 2013 or 2014, it’s time to upgrade.
Meta has confirmed that starting May 5, 2025, the green app will stop working on several older phones. And no, it’s not a bug. It’s permanent.
The reason? These phones can’t keep up anymore.
According to WhatsApp, the move is all about keeping the app safe, fast, and compatible with newer devices. So, any phone that can’t run their latest features or security tools is getting kicked out.
It’s not the first time this has happened, and it definitely won’t be the last. WhatsApp does this from time to time to avoid dragging old devices that can’t handle updates.
But if you haven’t changed your phone in years, you need to check now.
iPhones that won’t be able to use WhatsApp anymore:
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus
Any iPhone running below iOS 15.1
These iPhones are stuck on iOS 12.5.7, and there’s no update coming for them.
Android users have already been affected since January 1

How to know if you’re safe
If your iPhone is running iOS 15.1 or higher, you’re fine.
Same thing for Android users — if your OS is beyond Android 5.0, you can chill.
But if you’ve been ignoring those update pop-ups for too long, this is your sign to act fast.
What to do if your phone is on the list
1. Back up your chats
Before you lose access, back up your WhatsApp chats.
Use Google Drive for Android or iCloud for iPhones.
2. Check for updates
Some older phones might still be able to update. Go to your settings and check. If there’s an update, install it now.
3. Get a new phone
If your phone can’t update anymore, it’s time to let go. That device has served you well, but it can’t keep up in 2025.
This new policy affects both normal WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business users.
