Mohbad

Wunmi Aloba, the wife of late Nigerian musician Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has expressed her deep pain over his death, stating that it felt like a victory for some people.

In an exclusive interview with BBC Pidgin, Wunmi recounted how her husband fought to stay alive but tragically passed away. She also addressed several issues surrounding his death, including the ongoing debate over a DNA test for their child.

Mohbad, who died in 2023, was buried almost immediately, but authorities later exhumed his body for further investigation. Wunmi revealed that it was Mohbad’s father who decided to bury him the day after his passing, despite pleas from others to delay the burial.

“Everyone begged him not to bury my husband immediately, but he refused. He even called the Baale (community leader), but they told him he couldn’t bury someone at night,” she said in a BBC report.

Mohbad’s death sparked widespread outrage in Nigeria, with calls for justice amid allegations that he faced bullying, harassment, and assault while signed to Marlian Records.

On Knowing Naira Marley
Addressing claims that she had known Naira Marley, the CEO of Marlian Records, before he signed Mohbad, Wunmi denied any prior acquaintance.

“I didn’t know him. The first time I ever saw him with my own eyes was on the third day after he signed my husband,” she clarified.

DNA Test
Regarding her father-in-law, Joseph Aloba’s demand for a DNA test on her son, Wunmi stated that she has always been open to it.

“I have been ready for this DNA test since November 2023. I have no issue with it, but my father-in-law has not done the needful,” she said.

She further explained that legal proceedings are underway to obtain a court order allowing for a DNA test using a sample from Mohbad’s remains.
