Korean pop, shortened and popularly known as ‘K-pop’ is quickly taking over the world and the music industry. K-pop has become a global phenomenon with boy groups, girl groups, solo acts, all churning out unique sounds.

Today, we’ll take a deep dive into 3 of the most influential K-pop girl groups to follow;

Blackpink
Famously known as “the world’s most popular girl group”. Ever since their debut in 2016 with their hit singles ‘Boombayah’ coupled with ‘Whistle’ and the group’s digital single album, Square One. The group quickly made a name for themselves garnering global recognition and influence.

Consisting of four multi talented girls – Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa. While the girls are primarily singers and performers, they are also global brand ambassadors of the biggest fashion houses in the world like Chanel, Celine, Dior and Yves Saint Laurent.

They are known for breaking world records and creating insurmountable feats, one being the first K-pop girl group to hit 1 billion views on YouTube with Ddu-du Ddu-du in November 2019.
Their debut studio album in 2020, The Album, sold approximately 1.2 million copies in less than a month after its release, making them the first million-selling K-pop girl group.

New Jeans
New Jeans is composed of five members: Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein. New Jeans is spearheading the new generation of K-pop, tagged as the “4th Generation”. From their debut in 2022 with fun and flirty songs like ‘Attention’ and ‘Hype Boy’, it’s no wonder the group became the first K-pop act to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify. Despite them being shy of one year as a group, their music, concepts and style keep on redefining K-pop.

New Jeans are already brand ambassadors to luxury fashion brands with Danielle being selected as the global face of Burberry, Hanni, the brand ambassador for Gucci, Minji the global ambassador for Chanel and the group as a whole has been selected as global ambassadors for Levi’s.

(G)I-DLE
Formed by Cube Entertainment in 2018. The group consists of five members: Miyeon, Minnie, Soyeon, Yuqi and Shuhua. While K-pop girl groups tend to lean more towards girl-crush concepts, (G)I-DLE has carved a mature sound for themselves.

They are known for questioning society’s obsession with the humiliation, bullying and over-sexualization of women through their music. An example is their song ‘Nxde’. They also have some braggadocio tracks that inflate one’s self-esteem like ‘My Bag’.
