Pan-African artist, Nonofang Disetlhe, better known as Blulyt, has said her identity as a multidimensional entertainer has shaped the sound and creative direction of her music.

The artist, who has a background in dramatic arts and professional dance, said her experiences across different areas of entertainment had influenced the way she approaches music and performance.

According to her, her debut EP, Shades of Blu, was created to bring together the different sides of her personality and artistic expression.

She said, “Nonofang is calm, cool-headed, friendly, and bubbly, but she has different shades to her, just like the EP suggests. I’ve been in the entertainment scene for a while, learning and working across different spaces, especially dance and acting.

“Those experiences shaped my creativity and taught me how to express myself in different ways. With Shades of Blu, I’m bringing all those sides together and finally making my impact through my music.”

Blulyt said she had always regarded herself as an entertainer, adding that music had always existed alongside her involvement in dance and theatre.

“Absolutely. Music has always been a part of me alongside dance and theatre. I’ve always seen myself as an entertainer, so becoming a recording artist feels like another way to express the different parts of who I am. That’s really what Shades of Blu represents: different sides of me coming together in one project.”

She said her versatility also influenced her decision not to confine herself to a particular musical genre.

“I think it’s important not to confine yourself when you know you’re versatile. I work with different producers and enjoy bringing different sonic ideas together, while still making sure the music feels like me. I don’t want to follow one formula just because it works. Shades of Blu reflects that freedom because there’s something for different moods, emotions and experiences”, she stated.

The artist said her versatility would remain central to her identity regardless of the genre she explores.

“Every artist has their own DNA, and for me, that DNA has to remain intact regardless of the genre I explore. It’s like cooking. You can work with different recipes, but there are still certain things that make your food yours. So whatever genre I explore, I bring my own flavour into it. You could hear me on drill or even salsa someday and still recognise that Blulyt sound.”

According to her, she also intended to incorporate music, movement, acting, visuals and storytelling into her live performances.

“They should expect a full experience. I’m not just coming on stage to sing and leave. I want to bring music, movement, acting, visuals, and storytelling together. My background in dance and drama gives me a different way of connecting with an audience, and I want every performance to leave a lasting impression.”

She added that she wanted to build a global African brand recognised for music, strong performances and creativity.
