Why Davido’s Timeless Show Is A Glimpse Into His Artistic Evolution 

Everyone changes. It’s a pivotal part of life. And there’s decency in consistency. And admiration in results. With Davido, Nigeria’s helmsman for global hits, life has moved past the point of trying to prove a point. For him, it’s become a deliberate attempt to achieve the depths of musicality that warms his thoughts at night. 

And after dropping his third studio album dubbed, Timeless, after one of the most turbulent phases of his life, the music mogul returned last Sunday with an era-defining concert surnamed after the album.

Held at the Tafewa Balewa Square, with thousands of music lovers singing down the skies that cold night, the concert was a demonstration of how Davido’s “2.0” phase blushes with intentionality, heightened artistic expressions and his secret recipe: consistency. 

Apart from the frustrating ticketing icks, usual late start (the 2pm show started at past 9pm) and the rigidity of the venue, the show went on to make history as the first headline show by a Nigerian artiste in a stadium of that capacity. The stage was moulded with invisible glass screens that resembled the Nigerian National Theatre. The sound quality reverberated without any hitch.

The supporting artistes like Asake, Logos Olori, Cavemen, Fave, etc., dazzled the crowd with their energetic renditions. And Davido himself didn’t hesitate to dance to every musical note that permitted it, much to the delight of his uncle the Governor-Elect of Osun State and infamous ‘Dancing Governor.’ There are a thousand other ways the show could have been presented. However, Davido is on a novelty-seeking spree; and it is evident in his marketing and performance activities.

Barely hours after his tedious show in Lagos, he jetted out to Botswana, Monday morning, to perform and speak at the Forbes 30 Under 30 Summit. On a Monday! He’s also been actively embracing media appearances, since the album dropped – dropping the age-long egoistic behaviour of A-list acts that refuse to relate with local media during music release campaigns.

He’s also been actively pushing his new DMW acts, Morravey and Logos Olori, who also join him to grace the cover of Turntable’s latest magazine issue. He’s been active, to keep it simple. And while inactivity has never been his trademark, Davido has kept the momentum at an extra high this period, balancing both artistic inputs with intense groundwork. It’s been tagged the ‘rollout of a decade’ by music minds, globally. However, it’s more: it’s the evolution of the 31-year-olds artistry, before our very eyes.
