Davido has admitted that his greatest fear is not falling off the charts but failing to recognise when it is time to leave them.
The Afrobeats star made the revelation in a video that has gone viral on social media, where he reflected on the pressures of sustaining a long career in the public eye and the emotional reality of watching celebrated figures lose favour despite years of extraordinary success.
According to the singer, seeing icons become targets of criticism after decades of achievement has made him think deeply about his own future in music and the importance of leaving at the right time.
“My biggest fear is not knowing when to quit music,” Davido said. “Look at my good friend Ronaldo. After everything he’s done for football, they still laughed at him during the World Cup. I pray to God every day to show me the right time to pack it up.”
Davido pointed to Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo as the example that shaped his thinking, recalling the criticism the forward faced during the 2022 FIFA World Cup despite a career filled with league titles, Champions League trophies and individual records.
The singer said moments like that remind him how quickly public opinion can change, no matter how accomplished a person has been.
Now more than 16 years into his career, Davido said he has also been thinking about the emotional toll fame can take on people once the spotlight begins to fade. He revealed that he would like to establish a therapy centre for celebrities struggling to cope with life after their peak.
According to him, many public figures are unprepared for the psychological impact of no longer being constantly celebrated. He described the experience as a difficult adjustment, especially for people whose identities have long been tied to public recognition.
He added that the challenge extends beyond music, noting that even athletes who have won the biggest honours in their sport are often subjected to harsh criticism, proving that success alone does not guarantee lasting admiration.
Although Davido did not hint at retiring anytime soon, his comments have sparked conversations across social media, with many fans praising his honesty and willingness to discuss a subject many entertainers avoid. Others argued that the award-winning singer remains at the peak of his career and still has plenty to offer the industry.
For now, there is no indication that Davido is slowing down. With sold-out concerts, hit records and a firm place among Afrobeats’ biggest global stars, his career remains in full flight. But his latest remarks suggest that, even at the height of his success, he is already thinking beyond the next hit, hoping that when the curtain eventually falls, it will be because he chose the moment himself.
