The children of late Nigerian singer and journalist Onyeka Onwenu, have expressed their gratitude to Nigerians for the outpouring of love and grief following their mother’s passing.

Onwenu, known as the “Elegant Stallion,” tragically slumped and died shortly after a private performance in Lagos on Tuesday, July 31, 2024. She was 72 years old.

A statement has been released by her sons, Tijani and Abraham Ogunlende. They said they are “honoured and deeply touched by all the kind words, condolences, and gestures of support from Nigerians of all ages and from around the world,” the statement read.

“Your expressions of love and your admiration for her now extends to us. It has brought much comfort and solace.”

Onwenu is a true icon, celebrated for her multifaceted talent and contributions to music, film, journalism, and politics in Nigeria.

Additionally, she is popular for her powerful vocals, social awareness, and unwavering advocacy for peace, unity, and “One Love.”

“Also, we recognise that it is the joy and memories that she gave to Nigerians that have afforded us such an immense outpouring of love,” the family said.

“We are very aware of her diverse and multi-talented nature. An icon, a musical legend, a movie star, a journalist, a humanitarian and a politician, The Elegant Stallion. She was a world-class performer who blessed multiple generations with the beauty of her songs of unity and love.”

Funeral plans and activities for Onyeka Onwenu

Furthermore, the family assures that funeral plans and activities will be made public in due time. They expressed gratitude for the love and comfort provided by Nigerians. They stated that it is all due to Onyeka Onwenu’s legacy.

“We recognise that this love and comfort afforded to us is because of the love you have for her. You have our deepest gratitude. May we continue to draw inspiration from her lifelong advocacy of peace, unity, and one love as we celebrate her,” the statement concluded.
