The Associated Press reports that Chauvin was stabbed by another inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, around 12:30 p.m. He was seriously injured in the attack and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Bureau of Prisons confirmed the incident in a statement, saying that “responding employees initiated life-saving measures” before Chauvin was taken to the hospital. The agency said that it is investigating the incident and that no further information is available at this time.

Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter in the death of Floyd, who died after Chauvin knelt on his neck for over nine minutes during an arrest in May 2020. Floyd’s death sparked widespread protests against police brutality and racial injustice.

It is unclear what motivated the attack on Chauvin. The Bureau of Prisons is investigating the incident and will likely release more information in the coming days.
