Afrobeat star, Rema and Selena Gomez rocked the stage and walked away with the coveted Best Afrobeats award at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).
The duo had already taken the music world by storm with ‘Calm Down,’ earning nominations in three prestigious categories: Best Collaboration, Song of the Year, and Best Afrobeats.
But it was in the Best Afrobeats category that they etched their names in the history books, becoming the first-ever winners in this newly introduced category. They faced tough competition from fellow artists, including Burna Boy, Davido feat Musa Key, Ayra Starr, Libianca, Wizkid feat Ayrra Starr, and Fireboy DML.
‘Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ initially dropped on August 25, 2022, and quickly garnered attention for its brilliant blend of Afrobeats and pop elements. The remix of the track made waves of its own, becoming the first song to maintain a year-long position on the Billboard US Afrobeats Songs chart.
