Drum roll, because it’s that time of the year again. And yes, we are referring to our beloved country, Nigeria’s Independence Day. While the day is widely known for celebrating the years since we gained freedom from colonial masters (62 to be precise), it’s also an opportunity for you to worry less about what colour of the top, trousers, or gown to wear to an event on that day.

It’s no secret that green is the go-to choice when selecting what to wear to either a seminar about the history of Nigeria or an Afrobeats music festival. However, we can all pretty much agree that wearing green on October 1st is becoming a cliche.

Although the possibility of eliminating green as the official dress code for Independence Day is minimal, there is still a way for you to incorporate it into your style and stand out as the ultimate fashionista. In this article, we provide style tips and inspiration to step up your green game.

  • Go Monochrome or go home

The importance of the monochrome fashion trend cannot be emphasised enough, especially when green is involved. Styling green could be quite complex, which is why you should refrain from overthinking it. Rather than combine it with other colours, you could just stick with wearing green from head to toe.

  • Represent your tribe

Another way to look stunning and turn heads is by going down a more traditional fashion route. Discard the idea of wearing either a green blouse or shirt and grab the nearest green Ankara fabric or Aso Oke you have in your wardrobe.

  • Glamour is the new green

Make people “green with envy” with an attention-grabbing couture clothing piece made from expensive green fabrics like silk or fur. From dramatic sleeves to stoned bodice, take the look of that basic green gown from a 5 to a 10.

  • Next stop, accessories city

Sometimes, you don’t necessarily have to wear a green shirt to show you are in line with the theme of independence. A green bag, shoe, or hat would do the trick.

  • Experiment

While we would normally advise you not to combine green with bright colours like blue or pink, you could decide to try something new and not heed to our words. Step out of your style comfort zone by choosing not to rely on neutral colours like black to make your green pop.
