Nigerian entertainer, Nasiru Lawal, popularly known as Nasboi, has called out a popular radio station, Naija 102.5 FM, for what he describes as selfish clickbait tactics that threaten to undermine his professional relationships.
Nasboi made this known in a series of posts on his official X account.
According to Nasboi, the drama started after an interview where he was asked about his relationship with the Afrobeat heavyweight, Davido.
He gave a respectful answer. However, the radio station reportedly chopped the clip to show only the first half.
He wrote, “Too respectful to call out a radio station, but please @Naija102FM… clickbait can ruin a person’s career. Don’t be selfish, chasing clicks without caring about the damage it causes.”
The interviewer asked if Davido is ‘my guy.’ I said, ‘No, he is my boss.’ But what’s now all over social media is: ‘Davido isn’t my guy.’ Why cut out the part that gives the statement its real meaning? A little responsibility in how interviews are edited and posted can save a lot of unnecessary misunderstanding.
He revealed that this type of word twisting is exactly why he took a one-year break from podcasts and interviews. He lamented that media houses are chasing traction at the expense of the artist’s reputation.
“I stopped doing interviews and podcasts for a year because of clickbait. They twist your words just for traction, without caring about the damage it causes. I said, ‘Davido isn’t my guy; he’s my boss,’ but the headline became, ‘Davido isn’t my guy.’ I also said, ‘Not everyone will like my music; not everyone likes music from Burna Boy, Wizkid, or Davido.’ Waking up to see ‘Not everyone likes Wizkid’s music’ [as a headline]… una go see me again.” He noted.
Nasiru first captured the hearts of Nigerians as the “Low-Budget Davido,” a character so spot-on in its mimicry that it eventually earned him a legendary meeting and endorsement from the OBO himself.
However, Nasiru refused to be boxed into the skit-maker category. He possessed a deep passion for music that fans didn’t notice and many critics initially dismissed.
The transition from a viral comedian to an actual recording artist is a crazy, difficult path in Nigeria, often met with scepticism and criticism.
However, Nasboi silenced the doubters by staying consistent and delivering hits.
From the soulful vibes of “Lover Boy” to the massive commercial success of “Umbrella,” he proved his vocal range and songwriting prowess were no joke.
Nasboi successfully bridged the gap between digital content and the music industry; he has now become a blueprint for a new generation of talents and creatives who refuse to be defined by a single medium.
