Veteran Nollywood actress, Nkechi Nweje, has beem laid to rest on Friday in her hometown of Onitsha, Anambra State, with family, friends, and top movie stars in attendance to honour her memory.

The burial ceremony drew a large crowd from the film industry, as several actors, producers, and cultural figures turned up to pay their last respects to the beloved actress, who passed away on March 21, 2025, at the age of 60.
Among those present were Nollywood veterans Ngozi Ezeonu, Ebele Okaro, Chief Imo, and Stanley Ontop.

Also in attendance was Labour Party presidential candidate and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, who paid a personal tribute to the actress.

Nweje reportedly died from complications following an abdominal surgery she underwent in November 2024. Though she was initially said to be recovering, her health worsened in the days before her passing.

Born on June 5, 1964, Nkechi Nweje became known for her motherly roles in classic films such as “Royal War”, “Festival of Sorrow”, and “Coming Back from Congo”.

She made her acting debut alongside Kenneth Okonkwo in the movie “The Biggest Boy in Town”.

In a tribute, Okonkwo described her as a loving, hardworking, and decent woman, adding that her passion for acting left a lasting mark on everyone she worked with.

Nweje is survived by her husband, Azubuike Nweje, a director in the Anambra State Ministry of Health, and their six children.

Her death marks another loss to Nollywood’s golden generation, one that nurtured the early days of Nigerian cinema with grace, grit, and unforgettable performances.
