Nigerians are reacting to the response by the Minister of Women Affairs, Kennedy-Ohanenye, to a viral video of a lady filming her mother’s mental condition.

The minister, on her ‘X’ page, responded by quoting the video and saying the lady’s action is unacceptable and that she is doing it for her personal gain. The minister promises to reward anyone who knows how to reach the lady in question as well as her mother.

Her post, in part, read, “We condemn the disturbing video report of a woman’s mental illness being exploited by her daughter for personal gain and social media content. This is unacceptable, potentially harmful, and troubling.

We strongly condemn exploiting vulnerable individuals, especially those struggling with mental health issues. Mental illness demands compassion, understanding, and support – not ridicule or exploitation.

The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs urgently requests information about the mother’s identity and condition to ensure proper care and protection. A reward is offered for prompt location assistance.”
She also promised that appropriate actions would be taken to hold the lady in question accountable.

Uju said, “Appropriate actions must be taken to address this situation. We call on everyone to respect the dignity and humanity of those facing mental health issues and to report similar instances immediately. Let’s work together to prevent exploitation and support those who need it most.”

However, many Nigerians are condemning her response, accusing her of chasing clout, while also reminding her of once saying she would sue the UN a year ago.

One user by the name @emeka responded to the minister’s post by saying, “I’m sorry, but how is she exploiting her? Yes, she’s quite vulnerable, but again that’s her mother. She’s rather showing us how she still cares about her mum. Did you listen to her story?
I do not think you have interpreted this situation correctly.”

Another wrote, “How did she use it for content? All I see is a young lady showing the world her mother’s state and how she cares for her. Maybe you would say she should have taken her to a psychiatrist. Does the lady look like someone who can afford medical care for her mom?” – @jojoh

@deleteluwo wrote, “You swore to take the UN and agencies to court since last year over dumb allegations? Same you threatened the student that came out to accuse Prof. Same you with dumb allegations against World Bank and consultants collecting most of the loans. Now this.
Minister of Goof.”

@uratuchi said, “Who dey advise this alleged criminal of a minister?
A young girl has the courage to tag along with her mentally ill mother and still has the courage to put it out there without shame.
You then have the guts to tag her as exploitative. You’re nothing but an exploitative clout chaser.”

Many Nigerians have continued to express their disatisafrion, as it concerns the minister’s post.
