Aid agencies have long warned about the risk of food shortages in northeast Nigeria because of the conflict, which has killed at least 20,000 since 2009 and left more than 2.6 million homeless. In July, the United Nations said nearly 250,000 children under five could suffer from severe acute malnutrition this year in Borno state alone and one in five -- some 50,000 -- could die. / AFP PHOTO / STEFAN HEUNIS

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), AgroLog has distributed foodstuff and provided medicare worth N20 million to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in over 15 camps in southern and central parts of Kaduna State.

The medicare according to the Kaduna-based agric firm, was targeted at the survivors of banditry, some of who were amputated due to lack of medical care.

Speaking to journalists shortly before the distribution of the foodstuff and other basic daily needs, at the weekend, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of AgroLog, Dr. Manzo Maigari, said the gesture was designed to alleviate the sufferings of the IDPs.

His words: “We are here to give back to the society through victims of banditry. We have mobilised items of immediate need for the victims. These include beans, palm oil, rice, soaps and sanitary pads for no fewer than 10,000 IDPs in various camps. We budgeted N20 million for these items. Some are in kind, while part of the money is set aside to foot medical bills of some of the victims.”
