15-year-old drowns in Jigawa pond

The body of a 15-year-old boy, Sunusi Abubakar, was recovered from Mahayin Gidan Toro pond in Gabari village, Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State, following a tragic drowning incident.

Abubakar Musa Gabari, the deceased’s father, said the boy went to swim in the pond at around 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 30 September 2025, but failed to return home.

“We immediately mobilised a search team within the community and contacted security agencies to help locate him,” he said.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa State Command, confirmed the discovery.

According to the command’s spokesman, Assistant Superintendent Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, the boy’s body was found lifeless at approximately 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 1 October 2025, about 1.5 kilometres north of Gabari village.

“Prior to the recovery of the body, the shoes and trousers of the deceased were observed abandoned at the riverbank,” ASC Mahmud said. “The body showed no trace of injury and was subsequently handed over to the family for burial, which was conducted in accordance with Islamic rites.”

The NSCDC has appealed to parents, guardians, and community leaders to warn children and youths against unsafe swimming practices in open water bodies. “It is crucial to educate our children about the dangers of unsupervised swimming to prevent future tragedies of this nature,” ASC Mahmud added.

The incident adds to growing concerns about the safety of children and teenagers around open water bodies in rural areas of Jigawa State, where ponds, rivers, and other water sources are frequently used for recreation.
