Borno to raise evaluation, reconstruction panel on 16 destroyed communities
THE Borno State government is to raise a high-power panel on the“evaluation and reconstruction” of destroyed communities in 16 local councils of the state that were sacked by Boko Haram terrorists during the over three-year insurgency in the North East sub-region of the country.
Addressing stakeholders and other top government officials yesterday on the destroyed communities at the Government House, Maiduguri, Borno State Governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettimadisclosed that the Internally-Displaced Persons (IDPs) that voted at the camps, are heroes of democracy as they defied agonies and frustrations of participating in the electoral processes to elect their leaders.
He said the evaluation and reconstructions panel, was to be raised before the outcome of an interface between Borno State government and the incoming Buhari administration.
His words: “We are immediately setting up an Interim Emergency Team on Evaluation and Reconstruction of Communities to mobilise and start work in phases. While that is going, we already have a work plan for the convocation of a summit.
“We will only need to expand the group working on that and then change the focus to holding what we will call Borno Reality and Prospects Summit, which will have only one agenda and that agenda is to develop a Marshal Work Plan for Post Insurgency Borno.”
The plan, according to the governor, will clearly identify areas that needed the support of the Federal Government, international donors and the Organise Private Sector (OPC).
On implementation of Marshal Work Plan, he said: “Our target is to hold that summit in June so that by July this year, a delegation from Borno should be able to pay a visit to Aso Rock; and for the first time in recent years, Borno State will not be visiting Aso Rock as an opposition that is mostly perceived as a political enemy, we will be going as an APC State Government, meeting President Muhammadu Buhari of an APC-led Federal Government.
“We will present the work plan before the incoming President, our legitimate demands for reconstruction of communities, rehabilitation and
reintegration of our distressed citizens. We will, from the outcome of that summit, identify the support we shall demand from the Federal Government on what to do with hundreds of thousands of youths on the streets of Maiduguri, Biu, Monguno and lots of other places, many of whom have been rendered jobless by Boko Haram.”
On how foreign donors will assist, he said: “I will, after consultation with appropriate bodies, lead reasonable delegations to brotherly and friendly countries, international donor organisations and wherever we can get support to heal our ailing state.”
