2000 drivers undergo recertification programme at FRSC in Enugu

About 2000 drivers of an Enugu based transport company, Peace Mass Transit, are currently undergoing a week-long retraining and recertification programme at the Federal Road Safety Corps Training School, Enugu.

The Guardian gathered that the training programme was part of the measures put together by the transport company following the scale of road accidents that drivers have been involved in lately.

Speaking during the exercise, Commandant, FRSC Training School, Enugu, Kenneth Nwaegbe, stressed the need for drivers, especially those who operate the commercial fleet to indulge in regular retraining programme.

He stated that the nature of Nigerian roads, attitude of passengers they encounter, health situation among others must come to play if safety must be guaranteed, adding that the training would expose the drivers to practical testing, road signs, proficiency level, sight and blood pressure among others.

“We will ascertain their level of readiness and health situation to make them responsible drivers on the Nigerian roads. Part of the problem we have with road users is that they lack patience and tolerance; they overlook their passengers and see themselves as lord on the road. This is the mentality we will use this programme to correct among others,” he said.

Praising the Managing Director of the Peace Mass Transit, Dr Maduka Onyishi, for being the first to allow his drivers to be trained in the school, Nwaegbe called on the beneficiaries to use the opportunity of the programme to contribute in the quest to make Nigerian roads safe for her people.

Speaking at the event, Dr Onyishi stated that the company, which is now in its 20th year, had made safety her priority, adding that retraining and recertifying the drivers had become important to enable them be more responsible while on the road, stressing that there was a need for change in attitude and orientation.

“Out there, a lot is being said about Peace drivers. You need to go there and tell them that the negative impression being created against us is not true there is a sustained campaign of calumny against this and us is something you must guard against. You must look clean, you must remove public haste, we must rebrand this company and by your attitude, people will want to enter our bus and pay whatever we want them to pay. This is an opportunity for you because their can never is any out there to make you better drivers.

We will achieve more with your cooperation and support. Remember that the banner and name of the company is peace, and peace we will continue to give people,” he told
