20,000 flee Marte four years after resettlement

The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has said that at least 20,000 people have fled Marte, a town in Maiduguri, four years after they resettled in the town, which was once ravaged by terrorists.

Zulum disclosed this while meeting with reporters over the weekend.

According to the governor, residents who had been displaced by terrorist attacks and resettled four years ago have yet again fled following the recent surge of attacks.

The Guardian earlier reported that terrorists invaded a military base in Marte, killing five soldiers.

“Marte was resettled about four years ago, but unfortunately, over the last three days, it was ransacked and was displaced again. About 20,000 people left Marte for Dikwa,” said Zulum.

Like Marte, many communities in Borno have experienced an increase in terrorist attacks in recent times, thus exacerbating Nigeria’s humanitarian crisis and displacing many from their communities.

On Thursday, Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists killed at least 23 farmers and fishermen in the village of Malam Karanti near Baga, in the Kukawa Local Government Area of the state.
