Former Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Yobe State, pledging to build on the achievements of the current administration, while focusing on security and human development.
Speaking after submitting his nomination form, Baba explained that his decision to join the race was driven by a desire to “continue and improve on where the present governor will stop” when his tenure ends next year.
“I am in the race because I feel I have the passion, the credibility, and everything needed to lead the people of Yobe State as governor,” he stated.
The former police chief emphasised that his administration, if elected, would prioritise key sectors critical to the state’s development. He identified education, agriculture, and healthcare as major focus areas, noting that Yobe remains largely agrarian and requires targeted investments to unlock its full potential.
However, Baba stressed that security would remain the cornerstone of his agenda, describing it as the foundation for economic growth and social stability.
Regarding the reported consensus candidate backed by political stakeholders in the state, the ex-IGP dismissed the process, saying he neither participated in nor endorsed any such arrangement.
Addressing the growing number of former IGPs who have aligned with the All Progressives Congress, Baba described it as a matter of personal choice rather than coordinated action.
He urged his supporters to make informed political decisions by critically examining candidates’ programmes and party manifestos.
ALSO, another ex-IGP, Mohammed Adamu Abubakar, has ruled out the possibility of a consensus to pick APC’s flag bearer for the forthcoming governorship election in Nasarawa State.
Abubaker, who is one of the key contenders in the race for the party’s ticket, said nothing short of a direct primary would be accepted.
He spoke yesterday in Lafia through the director, contact and mobilisation of his campaign organisation, Isah Nathaniel.
