The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano has endorsed the adoption of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as consensus candidate of the party in next year’s election.
The adoption follows the recent ratification of the Kabiru Turaki led faction of PDP where Jonathan was confirmed as the party’s sole presidential candidate in 2027 poll.
Revealing the position of the party in Kano, the state Chairman Hon. Yusuf Ado Kibiya, posited that after careful review of the National Executive Committee’s decision regarding Jonathan’s candidacy, the branch considered it necessary to adopt.
Kibiya who spoke while addressing a press conference Monday in Kano said the position was also in full compliance with the party’s constitutional processes.
According to the party leader, “Kano PDP has reviewed the national executive’s decision regarding the presidential candidacy of former President Goodluck Jonathan,”
Kibiya asserted that PDP acknowledged the procedures that culminated in the decision, stressing that the party’s internal mechanisms must be upheld at all levels.
The chairman noted that the Kano chapter would continue to align itself with the broader objectives of the PDP while engaging constructively with stakeholders to strengthen the party ahead of future political contests.
“We acknowledge and respect the processes that led to this decision and affirm our support for their right to determine the party’s national trajectory, within the framework of our constitution and legal guidelines,” Kibiya stated.
“Our regional chapter remains aligned with the party’s broad objectives and will engage in constructive dialogue to advance PDP’s mission across Kano and Nigeria,” he added.
Kibiya also used the occasion to call for unity among party members, urging them to remain disciplined and committed to the collective aspirations of the PDP.
He assured supporters that despite recent political realignments and defections in some quarters, the PDP in Kano remains united and determined to provide credible leadership and democratic alternatives for Nigerians.
The chairman further reiterated the party’s commitment to democratic values, accountability and public service, expressing confidence that the PDP would continue to play a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s political future.
The leadership and hundreds of PDP loyalists had refused to defect along with former Governor Mal. Ibrahim Shekarau to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during the April wave of realignment.
