No fewer than 6,000 schools are expected at the 2024 Roseline Etuokwu Sigma National Secondary School Quiz Competition of Sigma Club of the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State.

The Chief Sigma at the UI, Moses Eniola and the Committee Chairman of Roseline Etuokwu Sigma National Secondary School Quiz Competition 2023/2024, Olagoke Olaoluwa, disclosed this while speaking with journalists at the UI Alumni Conference Hall, Ibadan.

The Roseline Etuokwu Sigma Secondary School Quiz Competition is a philanthropic initiative of the Sigma Club of the University of Ibadan, designed to connect with and inspire secondary school students.

Eniola said: “The 2024 competition is set to go national now under the leadership of the current Chief Sigma, Eniola Moses, with over 20,000 students from 6,000 secondary schools across Nigeria’s 774 local governments expected to participate. It will be divided into three stages: state, regional, and a final national competition.

“The 2024 competition offers a total of ₦8 million in cash prizes. The sponsor of the prizes is Rams Charity Foundation.”

On his part, Olaoluwa said:”We’re expecting all schools in Nigeria to participate. It will be in all states. It is to test the schools, not individual students. The subjects to be tested are mathematics, English language, and general knowledge. The test would be computer-based.

“It is to appreciate school along the education line. It is strictly for secondary schools. It is just to give awards to lovers of education and scholars as people in entertainment and sports are rewarded.

“We used to compete when we were young, and it helped us a lot. The quiz and debates made us prepare very well. It is better for the performance of the child.”

He also said adequate provisions had been made for accommodation for all the participants.

He also faulted the buzzword that education is a scam, saying education still remains the best legacy, adding that: “One of the reasons is to let the young ones know that education is not a scam. I don’t believe education is a scam. It is because of the education we had that has taken us so far.”
