62 persons died from 1,072 fire, emergency incidents in six months, Lagos agency reveals

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), yesterday, released its mid-year activity report for January to June 2025, which highlighted key emergency response statistics and operational successes, revealing that 62 persons died from the 1,072 incidents responded to.

A statement by the Senior Public Affairs Officer, LSFRS, Maria Fadairo, stated that in the first half of 2025, the agency responded to a total of 1,072 emergency incidents.

The incidents, according to the officer, comprised 922 fire calls, two minor explosion incidents, 10 building collapses – eight of it were partial, 73 rescue operations, and 65 salvage incidents.

The report also noted staggering 315 false emergency calls, emphasising the persistent challenge posed by non-genuine emergencies. During the period, the agency commendably rescued 252 individuals from perilous situations, including fires and building collapses but regrettably, 62 fatalities were recorded.

Fadairo said that the swift and decisive actions of the LSFRS were instrumental in protecting property across Lagos State, adding that estimated property valued at approximately N64.32 billion was saved, while losses were estimated at N10.72 billion.

Director, LSFRS, Margaret Adeseye, noted that the figures demonstrate the agency’s effectiveness in contributing to the gross domestic product while minimising damage, safeguarding lives, environments and assets throughout the state.

Adeseye added that the agency is proactively engaging stakeholders across the state to address the menace of fire outbreaks, saying that efforts will be further strengthened during the upcoming 2025 International Fire Safety Conference 2.0, where collaborative strategies for enhancing fire safety and emergency response will be further discussed.
