69 hospitalised over toxic emission in Kano

No fewer than 69 persons have been hospitalised over hazardous chemical discharge at Sharada quarters in Kano metropolis.

A resident, Aminu Yakubu, told The Guardian that the community suffered offensive pollution when the toxic substance was released, which left several people, including children and pregnant women with various health implications.
  
Although the nature and content of the substance were not yet known or ascertained by any concerned authority, residents lamented the possible multiplier health effects of the chemical, which they claimed has continued to spread discomfort in the area.
 
The incident occurred a few hours after Sheka quarters, another community in the metropolis witnessed a gas cylinder explosion, that resulted in the death of two people and injured 19 others.

MEANWHILE, the state Police Command said the area has been cordoned off to curtail the further spread.
 
Spokesperson for the Command, Superintendent of Police (SP), Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the Commissioner of Police, Ismaila Dikko, has ordered the deployment of a technical team to conduct a discreet investigation of the incident.
 
Similarly, the spokesperson for Kano  State Fire Service, Mallam Saminu Yusuf, said men of the service have begun fumigation the community to reduce the health hazard of the strange chemical.
