The Battle Axe Women Fellowship International, (BAWFI), Enugu State, at the weekend celebrated motherhood with fanfare. The event, held at the Living Praise Worship Centre For All Nations, Ugwuaji Road, Maryland, Enugu, drew guests from over five countries, including England and South Africa.

The major attraction at the ceremony was the celebration held for the more than 90 widows, who received succour from the Battle Axe Women. In her opening remarks, president of the fellowship, Dr. Linda Oge Okoye, former Dean, Faculty of Dentistry at the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, said they decided to put smiles on the faces of the widows and carry them along in the annual celebration of womenfolk.

“Every year, we celebrate motherhood, but I have a feeling that some women do not feel happy, since they have lost their husbands, some pathetically at a very young age of below 30 years old.

“We then decided to be remember them every year and we not only present food items and clothing materials to them, but also empower some of them with cash to improve their business,” she said.

Dr. Oge Okoye further explained that the organization intends to do more for the womenfolk, but is constrained by finance. She called on the government, the wealthy and corporate Nigeria to assist in reducing poverty presently ravaging Nigerian widows.

Responding on behalf of the widows, Mrs. Ruth Iwundu, said their hearts were filled with joy for the gesture, which has brought them happiness after a very long while of misery.
