AA sues IGP, others to court over alleged harassment of party chairman

The Action Alliance (AA) has dragged the Inspector General of the Police Force (IGP), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, to the FCT High Court in Abuja over an alleged attempt by the Nigeria Police to arrest, harass, intimidate, and disrupt the day-to-day running of the party’s affairs by the Chief Barrister. Kenneth Udeze led the party’s leadership.

AA, in the fundamental right suit number: FCT/HC/CV/2741/25 filed on 17th of this month, pointed accusing fingers at one Adekunle Rufai Omoaje of instigating the alleged infraction.

Among the respondents in the suit filed by Udeze and five others were ACP Yakubu Sule and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The suit, among others, seeks declaration as well as injunctive relief against the respondents based on the Illegal attempt by the respondents to interfere with the internal party affairs as regards the leadership and management of the affairs of the AA, over which they lack the statutory powers to interfere.

The applicants in the pending suit through their counsel, Mr.Peters Ugwuoke, in a letter dated 18th July, 2025 notified the Police of the pending suit and urgent need to maintain status quo ante and stop further invitation, interrogation and or harassment of Udeze and other NEC members of the party pending the hearing and determination of the fundamental right suit pending before the court.

In effect, the counsel argued that Udeze and other NEC members of the AA will not honor any Police invitation in respect of AA leadership pending the hearing and determination of the fundamental right suit pending before the court and demanded that the Nigeria Police stop all actions on further invitation, interrogation, and or harassment of the applicants.

The counsel maintained that failure of the Police to stop further actions on invitation, arrest, interrogation and or harassment of Udeze and other NEC members of the party who are the applicants in the pending fundamental right suit will amount to self-help and an affront to the judicial process and majesty of the court, for any party, security agency or authority to proceed to do anything touching the subject matter until the court makes judicial pronouncement on the suit.
