Members of the National peace committee on the 2015 led by former Head of State, Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar met with the leadership of the Nigerian military in Abuja, expressing appreciation to them for the “excellent work done” towards provision of security during the March 28 presidential and National Assembly elections.

The committee also congratulate the military for liberating parts of the North East from the insurgents.

Former Nigerian Ambassador to the United Nations, Prof Ibrahim Gambari who presented the first position of the peace committee told the military hierarchy including Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, Service Chiefs – Lt Gen Kenneth Minimah (Army), Vice Admiral Usman Jubrin (Navy), Air Marshal Adesola Amosun (Air Force) and other principal officers that much as they performed creditably in the presidential elections, “the journey is not ended yet.

The journey has to be perfected. We call on you to enhance and continue in Saturday’s (Governorship and State Assemblies) elections. No rascality. No taking of sides. You have to remain true to what you signed. You have to create the conducive environment for Nigerian voters to exercise their civic duties.

The world has gone past military rule and gone past when the military decides who rules them. The nation is grateful to you. So, continue to build on your efforts and professionalism. Like the Caesar’s wife, be above suspicion.”

Chairman of the peace committee, Gen Abubakar congratulated the military for “what they are doing to liberate our country from the Boko Haram. The Nigerian military make their mark any time they serve in the United Nations. So, I am not surprised that the military has been able to safeguard the country.

Certainly, in any country, civilians look up to the military, especially in times of crisis, to do this. And you have been able to do this creditably. This committee doffs its hats to all of you. and I am very proud to have been part of this military. We wish you well, God’s protection and may the Armed Forces of Nigeria grow from strength to strength.”

Air Chief Marshal Badeh noted that the military high command, being “products of democracy,” cannot “truncate what brought us up. The era of military in politics is gone and gone forever. We are feeling very proud that we did our professional responsibility. We are the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We are not the Armed Forces of any political party.”

Badeh pledged that the military will “replicate better what we did on March 28.”
