The Government of India has appointed Abhishek Singh, a senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 2003 batch, as the next High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The announcement was made by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday.
In an official statement, the MEA confirmed, “Shri Abhishek Singh (IFS:2003), presently Joint Secretary in the Ministry, has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly.”
Singh currently serves as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs.
Abhishek Singh has held a series of diplomatic positions in strategically important and conflict-sensitive regions. His previous roles include serving as Ambassador to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela from 2020 to 2023, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Kabul, and Counsellor at India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, where he managed peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, and political affairs. The MEA highlighted Singh’s experience in multilateral diplomacy, geopolitical analysis, and bilateral engagement as key qualifications for his posting to Nigeria.
Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy and a key strategic partner for India on the continent.
The two countries maintain bilateral relations in sectors such as energy, trade, education, and pharmaceuticals. Cultural and people-to-people exchanges between India and Nigeria have also been increasing in recent years.
Observers note that the appointment of a senior diplomat with Singh’s background is intended to strengthen India’s presence in West Africa and further develop cooperation across political, commercial, and consular domains.
India and Nigeria’s economic collaboration includes partnerships in oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and technology, alongside educational and capacity-building initiatives. Singh’s posting comes amid growing global interest in West Africa’s economic and strategic potential.
