Speaker of the all male 24 member Abia State House of Assembly comprising 20 from the Labour Party (LP) and four from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon Emmanuel Emeruwa, said on Tuesday that the house considered 75 bills in its three years and passed only 38.
Emeruwa spoke to journalists in the Abia State House of Assembly to mark the third year anniversary of the 8th House which was inaugurated on 14th June, 2023, stating that the house has worked harmoniously with the other two arms of government, the Executive and Judiciary.
He also said that the House granted partial autonomy to the Local Government, except full financial autonomy.
Adding that its oversight functions are in line with the law, he reported that the finances of the state controlled by various sectors are being audited by the House.
Speaker Emeruwa, who represents Aba South State Constituency, debunked allegations that his led House is mere rubber-stamp to the dictates of the Executive Arm, maintaining that when they have disagreements, they do so with civility and resolve same amicably, rather than in open confrontation.
On Constituency projects, while reacting to a question in that regard, he said that members take interest in the execution of projects in their constituencies, and ensure that the contractors selected are certified to be competent and with capacity to execute the contracts.
Asked what their challenges were, he said that beside inadequate funds, they have also not gotten everything they want.
Emeruwa named one of their needs as digitizing the operations of the house, but expressed optimism that this may be actualized the end of their statutory tenure in 2027.
