ADC Presidential Primary: David Mark says exercise proves strength of democracy

The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark

Senator David Mark, GCON, Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has said the party’s presidential primary exercise is a demonstration of the resilience and functionality of democracy in Nigeria.

Speaking at the official collation and declaration event of the ADC presidential primaries held at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, Mark described the gathering as more than the announcement of a presidential candidate, but a historic moment meant to send a message to Nigeria and Nigerians.

He said the exercise was designed to prove that democracy can still work, stressing that political competition does not have to become political warfare, and that political parties can be built around principles rather than personalities.

According to him, the event also demonstrates that even in a season of national anxiety, a brighter democratic future remains possible.

Mark said the significance of the gathering lies in its ability to show that history will remember what was done at the collation and declaration event.

He expressed appreciation to members of the African Democratic Congress for their steadfastness, patience, sacrifices, understanding, and faith in the party despite significant challenges, noting that many had once predicted confusion, division, or collapse.

He said the party had instead remained firm, adding that its members kept faith with the ADC, which today stands stronger, taller, and more united.

The ADC chairman also commended the Presidential Screening Committee and the Presidential Primary Election Committee for what he described as their patriotism, diligence, professionalism, and commitment to transparency despite logistical challenges, pressure, and national attention. He said their work strengthened the credibility of the exercise and reinforced public confidence in the party.

Mark further praised the party’s three presidential aspirants—former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former Chairman of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group Mohammed Hayatu-Deen—describing them as central to the uniqueness of the ADC.

He noted that the ADC stands out as the only party with three strong aspirants contesting its presidential ticket, which he said reflects its deep commitment to democratic practice.

According to him, the participation of the aspirants demonstrates loyalty to the party, courage to compete, and faith in democratic ideals.

He added that by subjecting themselves to the process, the aspirants did not merely contest an election but strengthened democracy itself, despite efforts in some quarters to create uncertainty and tension.

Mark concluded that the ADC owes them gratitude for their commitment and contribution to strengthening internal democracy within the party.
