The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has called for urgent and coordinated action to address the worsening security situation in the country, the need for constitutional restructuring, and the conduct of peaceful political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The position was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a caucus meeting held at the Akure residence of its leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti.
The meeting, which drew members from all Yoruba-speaking states, including Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Kwara and Kogi, deliberated extensively on security, economic challenges and socio-political developments in Nigeria.
The caucus, presided over by Oba Olu Falae, who chairs the Afenifere Executive Committee, expressed concern over rising insecurity in the South-West and other parts of the country, particularly increasing incidents of terrorism and banditry.
It called on governors in the South-West to adopt more decisive measures, including strengthening the operations of the regional security outfit, Amotekun Corps, improving surveillance mechanisms, and expediting actions toward the establishment of state police.
The organisation also urged collaboration with neighbouring states such as Kwara, Kogi, Edo and Delta, where significant Yoruba populations reside, to ensure coordinated security responses across forest corridors reportedly exploited by criminal elements.
While acknowledging federal government efforts, including recent engagements with security chiefs by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the group commended ongoing military operations and the sacrifices of security personnel in combating insecurity across the country.
Afenifere also paid tribute to fallen soldiers and expressed condolences to families of security operatives who lost their lives or sustained injuries in the line of duty.
The group recommended stronger support for the armed forces through improved equipment, enhanced welfare, and a combination of kinetic and non-kinetic security strategies. It further stressed the need for security agencies to intensify efforts in identifying and dismantling internal collaborators allegedly aiding criminal activities within communities.
On the political climate ahead of the 2027 elections, the organisation urged politicians and political actors to conduct their campaigns peacefully, warning against violence, thuggery and character assassination.
Afenifere reiterated its long-standing demand for restructuring, describing it as essential to addressing Nigeria’s structural challenges and promoting sustainable development. It noted alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda, expressing optimism that restructuring would accelerate national progress.
The group also announced plans for the centenary celebration of its leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, scheduled for May 11, 2026, inviting governors and prominent Nigerians to the historic event.
