Against the backdrop of rising security challenges in the Southwest zone in the recent time, pan-Yoruba socio-political association, Afenifere, has urged people in the zone to be more vigilant and also increase communal security in order to stem the tide.

The association noted that various crimes including banditry, armed robbery and kidnapping that have been raising apprehension in Yoruba communities needed to be fought to a standstill through the collective effort of all stakeholders in the geo-political zone.

Rising from a meeting held at the residence of its factional leader, Senator Ayo Fasanmi, in Osogbo, Osun State, Afenifere noted the situation calls for effective collaboration to contain the ugly trend.

“Afenifere commend the governors of the Southwest on the initiative of a security summit to be anchored by the DAWN Commission and affirm the radiance of Afenifere to work towards the development and
implementation of effective and working solution in respect of the security challenges facing the Southwest.

“We appeal to our people to redouble their effort on communal security as was the case in the past and call for the establishment of law enforcement agencies situation offices across the Southwest for reporting cases of trespasses of communal land by bandits,” Afenifere said.

The meeting resolved that leaders of the group would pay a courtesy visit to President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice president Yemi Osinbajo and governors in the Southwest to discuss the issue of security with
them.

The association thanked President Buhari for honouring the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, the late Chief Moshood Abiola, by naming a national monument after him. They also appreciated national leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for repositioning Southwest from what it was from 2011 to 2015.

Besides, Afenifere also appealed to aggrieved APC members in the Southwest who had resolved to work against the interest of the region in the 2023 elections to reconsider their stand and have a rethink in the interest and development of the zone.
