AFRICOM Commander reaffirms US commitment to Nigeria-led solutions to insecurity

The United States African Command (AFRICOM) Commander, Gen. Dagvin Anderson, has reaffirmed the US commitment to enabling Nigerian-led solutions through intelligence sharing and technical advising that enhance Nigeria’s independent operational capability in efforts to tackle insecurity in the country.

Anderson, who was in Nigeria for a two-day visit from February 8 to 9, 2026, was received by President BolaTinubu; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd); Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu and other senior officials.

A statement issued by the Director Defence Information (DDI) Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, said the AFRICOM Commander discussed shared security interests and the two nations’ partnership in countering terrorist organisations that threaten Nigerians, the United States, the region, and the world.

Uba said the leaders also discussed military training and laid the groundwork for future force development, real-world training, joint exercises and other unique capabilities that the United States could provide.

“Gen Anderson visited the joint US–Nigeria intelligence fusion cell, which bolsters Nigeria’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities and continues to build enduring capacity to enable real-time operational results.

“He interacted with senior Nigerian security officials and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to enabling Nigerian-led solutions through intelligence-sharing and technical advising that enhance Nigeria’s independent operational capability,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has approved the immediate deployment of the Chief of Army Staff Intervention Battalion of special forces to Plateau State.

The troops who are already in the state to aggressively and decisively deal with the recent resurgence of terrorist attacks will be a game-changer in addressing the threat of insecurity.

The Media Information Officer, Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace, Capt. Chinonso Oteh, said the troops were received by the Chief of Staff, OPEP, Brig.-Gen. Senlong Sule, on behalf of the GOC 3 Division and Commander, OPEP, Maj.-Gen. Folusho Oyinlola.

Oyinlola urged them to be decisive and ruthless in carrying out offensive operations against the terrorists.

He appreciated the proactive leadership posture of the COAS in providing the necessary combat enablers and other logistics requirements for the effective realisation of the troops’ mandate.

The GOC appealed to the citizens of the state not to panic on sighting large number of troops in movement and other heavy military equipment.

He appreciated the people’s continued support for the military and called for further support in providing actionable and timely intelligence on criminal elements to aid troops’ operations, thereby leading to the desired peace in the state.
