Hoodlums have, again, attacked a police station in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. They killed two policemen yesterday. This came few hours after a new Commissioner of Police, Christopher Owolabi, assumed office in the state, pledging to return sanity.

Owolabi had called for cooperation from the public in the fight against criminals and urged residents to always give information that could help track hoodlums to the security agencies.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said the hoodlums shot sporadically and also burnt down several buildings inside the station.

According to the source, two policemen were killed in the attack on Wednesday night in Obosi. The source said: “A large number of gunmen had stormed and attacked the station at around (between) 11.00p.m. to 12a.m. last night, leaving two police inspectors (names withheld) dead. All the suspects in the cell were freed before razing down the police station.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, while confirming the incident, said the state Commissioner of Police, Owolabi, had dispatched a tactical team for on-the-spot assessment of the incident.

He said the command was on top of the situation, adding that the tactical team, led by an assistant commissioner of police, had been directed to visit the place.

“The team was directed to possibly identify and apprehend the hoodlums that perpetrated the attack,” he noted. Ikenga said that investigation into the matter had commenced, while the bodies of the two fallen policemen had been deposited at a nearby mortuary. It will be recalled that gunmen had attacked no fewer than 10 police formations, and killed about 16 security operatives across the state recently.
