Suspected Fulani herdsmen last Thursday, struck at rustic Ossissa, Ndokwa East Local Council of Delta State, killing a 45-year old man, Mr. Nwadei Monday Ikechukwu.
Ikechukwu, a plantain farmer and hunter, was said to be on his way home after a hard day’s work on his motorbike, when the herdsmen, who waylaid him, fired a gunshot at him.
Ikechukwu’s grief stricken younger brother, Augustine Nwadei, lamented, yesterday, that the family was at a loss on the next step to take, as the case has been reported to the Police but no arrest has been made two days after the fatal incident.
A source, said two persons, including a lawyer, were reportedly kidnapped by the herdsmen, but the deceased unknowingly went close to the kidnappers’ den and was killed when they mistook him for an intruder.
A family source said a distraught Mrs. Priscilla Nwadei, the wife of the deceased, who is nursing a two months old baby, has not eaten since the incident, as she is yet to get over the shock of the death of her husband.
The Divisional Crime Officer (DCO), at Ashaka Police Station, who is said to be handling the case and the Delta State Police Spokesperson Celestine Kalu, could not be immediately reached for comment.
Meanwhile, two advocacy groups, the Nigeria Reconciliation and Stability Project of the British Council and Bayelsa State Peace and Conflict Management Alliance, at the weekend, began mediation in the recent conflict between Fulani herdsmen and farmers in the state.
