Some residents and artisans of Badagry, Lagos State, on Monday lamented the poor supply of electricity in the city which they claimed had seriously affected their living conditions and businesses.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that for over a month there had been little or no electricity supply in Badagry.

Those who spoke to the NAN correspondent said that lack of supply of electricity would make the forthcoming festive period a bleak one for them.

Mrs Seyi Poso, an ice-block seller, said that the poor electricity supply had affected her business adversely.

“For my business to thrive, I need constant electricity supply, but that has not been the case for now in Badagry.

“ This has been bad for my business.

“I sell soft drinks but I cannot refrigerate them so that they will be cold during this dry season because of the poor power supply and this always discourages my customers from buying from me.

“The relevant authorities should come to our aid and save us from this unbearable hardship because it is affecting our businesses,’’ she said.

Also, Mr Temidayo Adeite, a welder, said that he was spending not less than N2,000 daily on petrol to power his generator.

“For over a month now, electricity supply has been bad to the extent that we can go for over a week without power supply.

“If we have its supply at all, it will be just for 25 minutes or less.

“On a daily basis, I spend nothing less than N2,000 on fuel to power my generator.

“I spend more on fuel because petrol is sold at a higher price due to its scarcity across the country.

“Something urgently has to done about this because it is making people to suffer unnecessary,’’ he said.

Similarly, Miss Cynthia Adebisi, a hair dresser, residing in Ajara area of Badagry lamented that the poor power supply was taking its toll on her business.

“The situation is very bad but the truth is that we have been accustomed to it because it is being like this for a very long time.

“We have complained, we have written several letters to the authorities but nothing has been done about it.

“This is Yuletide when those of us in the informal sector of the economy are expected to make some money for our families.

“But lack of adequate electricity supply is taking its toll on our businesses.

“We have to rely on generator to do our business, and fuel is not even readily available and when available is at a high cost,’’ she said.

An official of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) who pleaded anonymity said that the power supply would improve soon.

“This problem is not only in Badagry alone but it extends to everywhere. People should be patient, things would get better very soon,’’ the source said.
