Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed

Twenty-four hours to the expiration of his last term in office as governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed yesterday identified paucity of funds as a clog in his quest to serve the people better through provision of sustainable infrastructure.

Commissioning the multi-million naira Geri Alimi Split Diamond Underpass and undertaking the symbolic inauguration of other road projects across the 52-year-old state, the sixth civilian governor said he was fulfilled serving his people for eight years in that capacity.

Ahmed said: “While I have no regrets and I am proud of my accomplishments as your governor, my only wish is that had my government had access to more financial resources, we would have done more for my people.” He rated the inaugurated highway as first of its kind in the entire North Central geo-political zone besides Abuja.

The governor added that the project, apart from its aesthetic value, would equally serve as a catalyst for the socio-economic development of the state.

Amid his low rating by the opposition, Ahmed however noted: “Indeed, I am proud of the excellent work we have done in the state in the last eight years, including but not limited to this project, which is an inspiring testimony to our vision and resourcefulness.”

He added: “the Geri Alimi Split Diamond Underpass will reduce the traffic burden experienced by our people, particularly during the peak hours and raining season. The project will also give our dear state a new look, enhance commercial and investment activities as well as boost the inflow of goods and services.”

Justifying the taxes imposed on the citizens, the governor stated that the Kwara State Infrastructure Development Fund (IF-K) bankrolled all the commissioned projects. As part of efforts to ensure security at the underpass, a closed-circuit television (CCTV) had been installed in strategic locations within the roundabout.Besides, a standby generating had also been positioned there to provide electricity all night.
