Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have expressed appreciation for a newly created portrait designed for the Obama Presidential Center by artist Akunyili Crosby, describing it as vibrant, thoughtful, and deeply expressive.

Crosby said the inspiration behind the work came from extensive engagement with the Obamas’ public presence, including interviews, videos, and podcasts.

She explained that she carefully studied these materials to better understand their personalities, values, and shared journeys, using them to build a narrative that guided the creative process.

According to her, the goal was not only to produce a visual likeness but to tell a broader story through art. She noted that she worked with her creative team to translate those moments into imagery that reflects emotion, connection, and lived experience.

The Obamas said they were moved by the artwork, describing it as filled with life and joy.

They added that it goes beyond appearance to capture character and presence, expressing confidence that visitors to the Obama Presidential Center will appreciate the depth and storytelling behind the piece.
