Speakers at a symposium to highlight the contribution of women to the development of Lagos State in the last 50 years have stated that promoting girl-child education is critical to the development of any society.

They said girl-child education should be upped in Nigeria if women will continue to improve on their contribution to the development of country, especially Lagos.

The symposium was put together by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO). Setting the tone for the discussion, the wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, said women have played critical role in the development of Lagos and it will continue to play it, if girl-child education is prioritised.

The first lady said women as a force for growth and development in any society, is seen in the progressive march of the state since its creation in 1967, up to the present day.

“The theme of our symposium is: ‘The Contribution of Women to the Development of Lagos State in the past 50 years’.Senator Oluremi Tinubu, speaking on theme, noted that there must be continued advocacy for the education of the girl-child and access to advanced education to the already schooled.

The President of Lagos Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Chief (Mrs) Nike Akande, also noted that girl-child education is not given the right attention it deserves like other gender issues, just as they don’t have easy access to capital to start or expand their businesses.

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Idiat Adebule, said the story of Lagos State is incomplete without highlighting impacts of notable women like the heroine madam Efunroye Tinubu, Mrs Olufunmilayo Ransome-kuti and others.
