The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State has commenced electronic registration (e-registration) of members and supporters of the party, with a target of no fewer than 300,000 members.

Speaking during the flag-off in Awka, the state capital, at the weekend, the Convener of the APC Anambra State Stakeholders Meeting, Senator Uche Ekwunife, hinted that Anambra State APC is targeting the registration of over 336,000 new members, a move she noted aims to strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 Presidential, National Assembly, and State Governorship/Assembly elections.

According to her, the e-registration process is the responsibility of ward chairmen and their executive members, stressing that the exercise would help the party identify loyal and committed members and empower them politically.

“We are targeting at least 1,000 new members per ward. If we achieve this across all electoral wards, we will register over 336,000 new members,” she said. “APC members are eager to win elections, and we cannot achieve that without the ward chairmen, who are the custodians of the party at the grassroots.”

Ekwunife said the meeting was held to review progress and chart the way forward for the party’s ongoing electronic membership registration (e-registration) exercise, which is ending in a few days’ time. She highlighted the importance of the e-registration, including registration requirements, empowerment, and party growth.

The five-time member of the National Assembly further warned that any party chairman who fails to demonstrate seriousness in the e-registration process risks isolating himself, stressing that chairmen are the chief promoters and mobilisers of the party.

Ekwunife observed that there was no significant federal backing during the last election, yet the party still performed creditably under the circumstances.
“We did not get the level of federal support expected of a ruling party, yet we still recorded meaningful progress,” she said.

Ekwunife, who was the APC’s Deputy Governorship Candidate in the November 8, 2025, Anambra governorship election, stressed that individuals registering during the ongoing e-registration exercise represent the core and committed membership of the APC in Anambra. She lamented that the party could have advanced further if it had received at least 20 percent support.

“If the party had received at least 20 percent support, we would have gone far in the election,” she said. “The commitment I witnessed among APC members, ward leaders, and chairmen was overwhelming. APC is no longer a fringe party in Anambra; it has come to stay.”

According to her, ward leaders are the most critical pillars of the party’s organisation, noting that party strength and electoral success are built from the grassroots.

“The ward leaders are even more important than myself in the party because everything starts and ends at the ward level,” she stated.
Senator Ekwunife urged party members to drum up support for APC across the state in preparation for the 2027 general elections. The former federal lawmaker also called for prayers for the country to succeed where it has fallen short.

Ekwunife, who is the Director-General of the South-East Governorship Forum, described the APC in Anambra State as formidable and resilient, assuring party faithful that the setbacks experienced in the last election would not be repeated.

In his remarks, the Anambra State Chairman of APC, Chief Basil Ejidike, thanked Ekwunife for agreeing to host the meeting, noting that the essence was to develop strategies for a successful e-registration process across the state. He pledged that the party would ensure widespread registration to enhance its leverage at both state and national levels.

Ejidike drew an analogy between mobilisation for e-registration and politics as a game of numbers, stressing that no party can win elections without a strong membership base.

“The purpose of this gathering is to evaluate participation in the ongoing e-registration exercise and ensure fairness and seriousness. In a few months, we will be approaching another election cycle, and without the right numbers, we will not be reckoned with nationally,” Ejidike said.

Chief Ejidike also disclosed that the Anambra APC has received no external financial support, noting that all activities have been funded internally by stakeholders within the state.

“National leadership directed us to source funds internally. We must prove that APC can stand strong in Anambra. This e-registration exercise is critical,” he said.
He appealed to ward leaders and stakeholders to strengthen internal cooperation and improve participation in meetings, stressing that synergy between ward executives and stakeholders is essential for party growth.

“When stakeholders are functional at the ward and local government levels, the party grows from the grassroots to the state level,” he added.

Also speaking, the Vice Chairman of APC (Anambra Central Senatorial Zone), Chief Augustine Muomife, regretted that members of the party have witnessed a series of use-and-dump acts by successive administrations of the party. Muomife, who traced his membership from the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), through Action Congress/Action Congress of Nigeria, to the All Progressives Congress, further lamented that party patronages have been given out to non-party members, a development he said affected motivation. He pointed out that loyal party members are always mobilised for e-registration and other membership drives, but appointments are given to non-party members for lucrative posts.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of cash awards to the three best-performing local government areas in the e-registration exercise: ₦500,000 for first place, ₦300,000 for second place, and ₦150,000 for third place. A breakdown of the performance showed that Njikoka Local Government Area recorded the highest number of registered members, followed by Awka South and Onitsha South.
