Anambra State governor Chief Willie Obiano has said that the state government would set up a committee to plan and coordinate activities to give late Dr Alex Ekwueme, a befitting burial.

Obiano told newsmen in Awka that the plan was imperative, stressing that the committee would be enlarged to include members from the five Southeastern states and beyond, because the deceased was a worthy son of the Anambra and who deserves a worth burial.

“The committee will be charged with the responsibility of planning for a befitting burial,” he said, adding that Ekwueme was one of the finest jurists that the nation has produced and deserves honour by the state.

The Governor described the late elder statesman as a father, whom he shared very intimate relationship with, describing his demise as a great loss to the state and the country.

Governor Willie Obiano and his wife, Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano, have since paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Icon at his country home, Ezioko village, Oko, in Orumba North council Area of Anambra state where the younger brother of the late elder statesman and traditional ruler of Oko, Igwe Laz Ekwueme, received them.

Meanwhile, the Governing Council and the Management of Federal polytechnic Oko Anambra State have called on the Federal Government to immortalize Dr. Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme. The management said that immortalising its founder will serve as a pat on the back and source of encouragement to the community, especially when considering his major role in the nation’s democracy.

A statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Polytechnic, Mr. Obini Onuchukwu and made available to newsmen yesterday, said, “The Management on behalf of the Governing Council and entire Polytechnic community expressed shock over the news of the demise of Ekwueme, who founded the Polytechnic in 1979 as College of Arts and Science.

“Ekwueme will be remembered for his fatherly role and his efforts in attracting development to the polytechnic as well as political strength for the entire Southeast zone in particular and Nigeria as a whole.

“The news of his demise, which is grievously shocking has thrown the entire polytechnic community into mourning especially when the history of the Federal polytechnic Oko can never be told without the name of the late Patriarch being mentioned.”
