The Anambra State Government has dismissed as false and misleading reports circulating on social media and some media platforms alleging that Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo introduced a new burial law imposing restrictions on condolence visits and the use of cows and goats during funeral ceremonies.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the state government described the reports as “entirely false, baseless, and a deliberate act of misinformation.”
The government clarified that no new burial law has been enacted by the Soludo administration, stressing that the only existing law is the Anambra Burial Law of 2019, which was signed by former Governor Willie Obiano.
According to the statement, the claims being circulated online are not contained in any section of the 2019 law. It specifically refuted allegations that cows and goats have been banned during condolence visits, describing such assertions as fabricated and intended to mislead the public.
The state government also criticized some media organizations for allegedly publishing unverified reports without proper fact-checking, warning that the spread of misinformation could undermine public trust and create unnecessary tension.
It urged residents and members of the public to disregard the viral claims and rely only on official communication channels of the Anambra State Government for accurate information regarding government policies and regulations.
The statement was signed by Law Mefor, Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, on May 19, 2026.
