It was another black Saturday yesterday in Kano as another early morning fire engulfed the popular Sabongari Market in the ancient city, destroying property worth billions of Naira.

Although the cause of the fire was not known at the time of filing this report, eyewitness said it started at about 3am and continued for more than 12 hours.

The fire incident, which was said to have started at the footwear section of the market, gutted more than 300 shops.

Sabongari market is the only market for all ethnic groups in Kano.

Three shop owners had to be revived after they became unconscious when it dawned on them that they had lost millions Naira worth of property.

First bank branch located within the market may have been consumed in the inferno as the fire stretched across other sections of the market, including gold, cosmetics footwear and consumables.

Private fire fighters, including those of the Chinese community, Nigerian Airforce, NNPC and state fire service operators made frantic efforts to bring the raging fire under control.
